Explore
Explore lets you break down your energy history by time-of-use period, so you can see what you actually paid for instead of raw totals that include hours billed at $0 (like a “free nights” plan window).
Explore tab (all plans)
Section titled “Explore tab (all plans)”A free Explore tab lives inside the Energy Charts card on the Live Dashboard, alongside Power Flow and Battery.
- On the dashboard, open the Energy Charts card
- Click the Explore tab
- Pick a preset: What did I pay for? (paid vs. free hours) or How do my rate periods compare? (by TOU period)
It shows the last 7 days, split into paid-hours and free-hours totals, cost, and a bar chart colored by whether each period was paid, free, mixed, or had no matching tariff rate. Switching presets is instant — the week’s data is loaded once and regrouped in your browser.
Under the tiles, a Where your home’s power came from card totals the week by source — how much of your home’s consumption ran on solar, on the battery, and on the grid, as a per-day average. See Where your power came from below for how it’s worked out.
Data builder (Premium)
Section titled “Data builder (Premium)”Click Open in the data builder from the Explore tab, or go directly to app.gridgetter.com/explore, for full control:
- Date range — last 7/30/90 days, last 12 months, or a custom range you pick to the hour
- Group by — hour of day, day of week, day, week, month, TOU period, paid vs. free hours, or on / off peak
- Metrics — grid import/export, solar, battery charge/discharge, home load, battery SOC min/max, plus three drawn from Tesla’s own records: home load by source, charge from solar vs. grid, and grid outage
- Chart type — bars or a line
- Colour by — tariff pricing or automation window
- Filters — paid hours only, weekdays only
Choosing Custom range opens start and end pickers below the dropdown. Pick the dates and times you want; Explore rounds outward to whole hours, since energy history is recorded hourly. If your plan limits history, a custom range still gets clamped to what your plan includes, and the notice above the tiles says so.
The page’s URL fully encodes your current view, so a link you copy or bookmark reproduces the same chart, table, and filters for anyone who opens it (on your account).
Only the date range fetches new data. Every other control — grouping, metrics, filters — regroups the hours already loaded in your browser, so changes apply instantly.
The summary tiles above the chart always describe the same slice of data the chart and table below show — turning on Paid hours only or Weekdays only narrows the tiles too, not just the chart.
The tiles adapt to your plan. Grid import · paid hours and Cost · paid hours always show. Grid import · free hours and Share paid only appear when the range actually contains $0 hours — on a plan with no free window they’d read “0.00 kWh” and “100%” every time, which says nothing. In their place, if any hours couldn’t be priced, a Grid import · unpriced tile shows how much energy that covers.
If a range reaches back beyond what Grid Getter has already stored, the missing hours are fetched from Tesla during the request, which takes a few seconds. When that happens the loading placeholder shows an animated “Loading historical data” notice so you know it hasn’t stalled.
The heading shows the dates actually loaded. If your plan limits history (free tier: last 90 days) or a very long range holds more hours than can be loaded at once, a notice above the tiles says so — in the latter case the oldest hours are the ones left out, never the most recent.
Where your power came from
Section titled “Where your power came from”Below the summary tiles, the Where your home’s power came from card disaggregates the selected range: a bar and three percentages — say 92% solar, 5% battery, 3% grid — showing what served your home’s consumption, each with its kWh. Under it, a totals line gives the range’s home load, solar production, export, import, and battery charge and discharge, so you can weigh the whole window at a glance rather than reading it off a chart.
The percentages are shares of home load over the range on screen, and they always add to 100. Like the tiles, the card follows the filters — turn on Paid hours only and it describes just those hours.
Where the split comes from is stated on the card:
- Measured breakdown for every hour — every hour’s split was recorded, either by Grid Getter’s own readings (see Filling in history from Tesla) or by Tesla’s history.
- Estimated from hourly totals — the hour predates Grid Getter attributing power and has no Tesla record. The estimate assumes solar serves the house first, then the battery, then the grid, with surplus solar charging the battery before it exports. That’s the order a self-powered Powerwall follows, so it’s usually close, but a single hour that both charged and discharged, or both imported and exported, can only be approximated.
- Measured for N of M hours — a mix of the two.
The card is hidden for a range that recorded no home load at all, rather than showing a row of zeros.
On and off peak, by your automations
Section titled “On and off peak, by your automations”Explore can split your history by your own peak windows rather than your utility’s — the hours your active Peak Time and DemandGuard automations are scheduled to run. That answers a question TOU periods can’t: what did I actually import while my automations were working?
Three controls use it:
- Group by → On / off peak buckets every hour into On peak, Off peak, or No peak automation
- Colour by → Automation window recolours the chart by window instead of by tariff pricing
- Grouping by hour of day also shades the peak hours behind the bars, so the window is visible at a glance
An hour counts as on-peak if a window covers any part of it — a window starting at 4:30 PM claims the whole 4 PM hour, since history is hourly. A group spanning both (5 PM across a weekday and a weekend, say) shows as Mixed.
Filling in history from Tesla
Section titled “Filling in history from Tesla”Grid Getter records your energy every few minutes from the moment you connect your Powerwall — so on its own, Explore could only ever show you history from your sign-up date forward, with holes wherever a reading was missed.
It doesn’t stop there. When you pick a range Grid Getter hasn’t recorded in full, it asks Tesla for the missing hours and fills them in. Your Powerwall has been keeping this history since it was installed, so a range that predates your Grid Getter account still has something to show. Hours fetched this way are saved, so the next time you open that range it loads straight away.
Under the date range at the top of the page you’ll see how much of it is covered — for example “1,214 of 1,440 hours · 226 filled from Tesla”. A long range fills in over a few minutes: the most recent months arrive first and the rest continue in the background, so reopening the page a little later shows more. If a stretch says unavailable, Tesla has no record of it either — usually because it predates your Powerwall’s installation.
Three metrics need a per-source breakdown rather than plain totals:
- Home load by source — how much of your house was running on solar, on the battery, and on the grid, stacked into one bar
- Charge: solar vs. grid — how much of your battery charging was free solar and how much you bought
- Grid outage — minutes your home spent off the grid, running on the battery
Grid Getter now records the first two itself, attributing every reading as it arrives — so for any hour recorded since that started, the split is measured, whether or not Tesla has a record of it. Older hours get their breakdown from Tesla’s history where it was filled in. Grid outage comes only from Tesla, since our own readings can’t see it.
They stay greyed out until the range you’re viewing actually has that data in it. Where a group has none, the table shows — rather than a zero — Grid Getter would rather say “unknown” than imply you used nothing. The source-mix card above the chart still shows those hours, labelled as an estimate.
Bars or a line
Section titled “Bars or a line”Chart type switches the same data between bars and a line. Bars suit comparing a handful of groups side by side — hour of day, day of week, TOU period. A line reads better across a long run of them, where a 90-day or 12-month view by day turns into a picket fence of thin bars.
The colouring carries over: with a single metric the line’s dots keep the pricing (or automation-window) colour of each group, so the legend below means the same thing either way. Your choice rides along in the page URL and in a saved view.
Charting several metrics
Section titled “Charting several metrics”Tick one metric and the chart plots it as a single series, coloured group-by-group by pricing (or automation window). Tick more and each metric becomes its own bar — or its own line — with a fixed colour per metric matching the Power Flow chart — solar gold, home load blue, grid red, battery green — and the legend names the metrics instead.
Mixed groups
Section titled “Mixed groups”A group can contain both paid and free hours — for example, 3 PM grouped by hour of day across weekdays (on-peak) and a weekend (free). Rather than labelling the whole group as paid, Explore splits its import into Paid kWh and Free kWh columns, colors the bar as Mixed, and shows the kWh-weighted average rate (marked avg). Cost always covers the paid hours only, so the Cost tile and the Paid kWh tile reconcile.
Saved views
Section titled “Saved views”Click Save this view to name and store your current selection. Saved views appear in the left rail — click one to load it, or the × to delete it. Saved views are a Premium feature; on the free tier the button is shown but disabled.
You can keep up to 25 saved views per site, and a name can be up to 80 characters. At the limit, saving tells you so — delete a view you no longer need to make room.
Table and CSV export
Section titled “Table and CSV export”Below the chart, a collapsible table lists every group with its total import, paid and free kWh, rate, and cost. Once a range has a per-source breakdown, it also gains the load-by-source and charge-by-source columns; grid outage time appears once the range includes Tesla history.
Click CSV to download the current table as a spreadsheet file. The export adds unpriced kWh, the paid/free/mixed classification, how many hours each group covers, and how many of those came from Tesla — so you can tell a fully recorded row from a filled-in one.
Downloading your data is a Premium feature, matching the export under Settings → Data. On the free tier the CSV button stays visible but disabled.
Large numbers are shown with thousands separators throughout — tiles, table, and chart — so a month or year total reads as 13,048.60 rather than 13048.6.
Why some hours show $0
Section titled “Why some hours show $0”If your tariff has a free window (e.g. free nights), hours inside that window bill at $0 and are excluded from your paid-hours totals. Explore always derives paid vs. free from your actual tariff rate for that hour — never a fixed clock window — so it stays correct if your plan’s free hours change.
If Grid Getter can’t read your rate plan from Tesla at all, the summary tiles say Rates unavailable and show your real grid import rather than a row of zeros. Your energy data is still there — only the pricing is missing. Reconnecting Tesla, or setting up your plan under Settings → Energy Plan, restores the cost columns.
