Backup Mode
Backup mode is a Tesla Powerwall mode you won’t find in the Tesla app anymore — but Grid Getter uses it behind the scenes to hold your battery rock-steady during a DemandGuard demand hold, at any charge level, including the ones Tesla’s own app won’t let you set directly.
What is Backup mode?
Section titled “What is Backup mode?”Backup mode was Tesla’s original third operating mode, alongside Self-Powered and Time-Based Control (Autonomous). In Backup mode, your battery is reserved exclusively for outages, while your home runs entirely on grid power — with grid charging switched off, which Grid Getter always does, it sits fully idle, neither charging nor discharging. If the grid goes down, the battery is ready to take over immediately.
Tesla removed Backup mode from its app years ago, but its cloud platform still honors it. It’s a quiet feature — you may not even see it named anywhere in the Tesla app while it’s active.
Why it’s special
Section titled “Why it’s special”Every other way of holding your battery steady runs into the same wall: Tesla’s app and cloud API refuse to accept a backup reserve between 81% and 99%, silently clamping it down to 80% instead. That’s fine if your battery happens to be at 80% or below when a hold starts — but if it’s sitting at, say, 93%, a reserve-pin hold can’t pin it there. It gets rounded down to 80%, and the 13 percentage points above that go along for the ride, discharging (or charging) instead of staying put.
Backup mode doesn’t have that limit. It holds your battery exactly where it is — 93%, 87%, 100%, any level — with no clamping and no rounding.
How Grid Getter uses it
Section titled “How Grid Getter uses it”When a DemandGuard automation needs to hold your home on grid power during a demand event, Grid Getter switches your Powerwall into Backup mode. Your battery stops charging and discharging entirely and holds its exact charge level, while your house draws what it needs from the grid instead.
Backup mode alone charges the battery from the grid at roughly 3.3 kW per Powerwall, climbing back toward 100% — the opposite of what you want during a demand hold. So Grid Getter always pairs the switch into Backup mode with turning grid charging off. Together, the battery neither charges nor discharges: it just sits at its exact charge level for as long as the hold needs to last.
This is what makes Backup mode a better hold than a reserve pin for batteries sitting between 81% and 99%: it’s proof against the clamp, and proof against an unwanted force-charge. If Tesla’s platform ever stops honoring Backup mode, Grid Getter automatically falls back to the reserve-pin hold — pinning the reserve at the battery’s current charge, never above it — so your demand protection keeps working either way. What you’ll see
Section titled “What you’ll see”In the Tesla app: Backup mode may not be labeled anywhere while a hold is running — it’s not a mode Tesla surfaces in its own UI anymore. Don’t be surprised if the app shows something unfamiliar, or nothing distinct at all, during the hold. Your battery’s charge level will simply stay flat.
On the Live Dashboard: while a DemandGuard hold is active, the Self Powered / Autonomous mode toggle shows a DemandGuard pill next to it, letting you know DemandGuard — not your own mode setting — is controlling your Powerwall right now. Tapping the toggle still works, but Grid Getter will ask you to confirm (“DemandGuard Is Active”) before switching, since doing so stops the hold early.
When the hold ends: your battery resumes charging and discharging normally and your own operating mode (Self-Powered or Autonomous) comes back right away. Grid charging is a separate matter — if Grid Getter turned it off, it stays off for the rest of the demand window rather than switching back on the moment the hold releases, then re-enables once the window ends (or if the automation is disabled). You don’t have to do anything.
Storm Watch interaction
Section titled “Storm Watch interaction”Backup mode only works because Grid Getter pairs it with turning grid charging off — and that pairing is exactly what would get in Storm Watch’s way if it tried to activate during a hold. So if your DemandGuard automation has Respect Tesla’s Storm Watch turned on, Grid Getter skips Backup mode entirely and holds your battery with the reserve-pin hold instead, leaving grid charging alone so Storm Watch can still kick in for emergency preparedness.
